Eye wrinkles are a natural part of getting older. They typically start to make their debut in your 20s or 30s. While there is nothing wrong or shameful about signs of aging, you may wish to prevent wrinkles or to make them go away as much as possible. Depending on your age and the depth of your eye wrinkles, you may find certain treatment methods more effective than others.

What Are The Different Types Of Eye Wrinkles?

In order to understand what helps with eye wrinkles, it’s good to know what the different types of eye wrinkles are in the first place. This can help you to prevent them from appearing for longer or to prevent them from getting deeper quicker if you already have them.

Dynamic Wrinkles

These are caused by repeated contraction of muscles and noticeable when those muscles are in use. If you are someone who is very expressive, you will likely notice dynamic wrinkles sooner than someone who isn’t very expressive with their face. Dynamic eye wrinkles typically result from smiling or squinting.

Static Wrinkles

These are caused by skin damage and can be seen even when you are not using the muscles in the area. Over time, dynamic wrinkles can turn into static wrinkles. Static wrinkles can result from sun exposure, smoking, and poor nutrition.

Wrinkle Folds

These occur when your face starts to sag with age due to a loss of collagen and firmness in the skin. While more commonly seen between your mouth and nose, they can also appear under your eyes.

What Causes Wrinkles Around Your Eyes?

We touched on this a bit in the above section, but we’ll go more in depth here.

Repeated Facial Expressions

As seen with dynamic wrinkles, which can in time turn into static wrinkles. While it’s often said that people who smile a lot are more youthful, this use of the facial muscles can lead to earlier wrinkles. As previously mentioned, this doesn’t mean you should stop smiling! It is simply a natural part of aging.

The Aging Process

As we get older, our skin loses volume and elasticity. Hence why it starts to sag and get wrinkly. The skin around our eyes is thinner than the rest of our face due to the presence of fat pads around our eyes, which keep our eyeballs cushioned and protected. Since this skin is thinner and more delicate, it can show signs of aging sooner than the rest of your face.

Sun Exposure

People with lighter skin tones are more likely to get wrinkles around their eyes sooner than people with darker skin tones. This is because of how darker skin has more pigmentation which can protect against the sun. Everyone needs to wear sunscreen on a daily basis in order to protect their skin from harmful UV rays. It can also keep your skin firmer longer.

Poor Circulation

If you are prone to dark circles, you may have poor circulation. If you have poor circulation, you may get wrinkles around your eyes sooner due to how decreased blood flow can result in increased damage to your collagen and elastin.

Pressure To Your Eyes

If you’re someone who likes to sleep with your face smooshed into the pillow, this can cause you to get eye wrinkles sooner, due to the pressure to your eyes. This is also why it isn’t recommended that you pull on the skin around your eyes, such as when trying to do a cat eye or when you’re frustrated.

Can Eye Wrinkles Go Away?

eye wrinkles

There’s a lot you can do to prevent eye wrinkles, from wearing sunscreen every day to ensuring you use your eye cream day and night. These can also help with minimizing their appearance and keeping them from getting deeper. As to whether or not eye wrinkles can go away, certain treatments can give this effect, like getting Botox.

Eye Cream

Eye creams are great for both preventing wrinkles around your eyes and for minimizing their appearance. They hydrate your eye area and can also firm it. Hydrated skin isn’t as tight as dry skin, so it is less likely to wrinkle. Certain ingredients like retinol can encourage collagen production, which can smooth your wrinkles.

Sun Protection

The best treatment is prevention. You want to wear sunscreen every day, even if it’s cloudy or you’ll be inside every day. Wearing sunglasses can keep you from squinting, which can also help to prevent wrinkles.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is bad for you for many reasons. It can damage your skin cells, causing you to look older sooner.

Mind Your Sleeping Habits

Silk pillowcases can help to protect your skin. If you’ve a mind to prevent wrinkles around your eyes and you’re a side or stomach sleeper, you may consider training yourself to sleep on your back.

Facials

Facials can stimulate blood flow and collagen reduction. Combined with good-for-you products, many people feel transformed by a good facial.

Injectables

All of the above can help to prevent eye wrinkles or prevent them from getting deeper, but if you want a significant difference, you may turn toward injectables. Botox can freeze the muscles around your eyes, preventing wrinkles from movement. Fillers can fill out your wrinkles. Injectables can both keep wrinkles from forming and smooth them out if you have them.
